His Excellency Mr Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Lebanon, Dr Nawaf Salam, of the Council of Ministers' decision to ensure the state's exclusive possession of weapons throughout Lebanon.
This decision is based on the Taif Agreement and relevant international resolutions, and in implementation of the oath of office address by His Excellency the President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun.
His Excellency Mr Albudaiwi affirmed that this decision is a significant step towards strengthening the sovereignty of the Lebanese state, consolidating stability and security for the brotherly Lebanese people, and activating its institutions.
"Progress on this path, coupled with the required reforms, will greatly contribute to enhancing the confidence of the international community and multilateral partners, and pave the way for a more attractive investment environment, including for the private sector," His Excellency stated.
Moreover, His Excellency reiterated the GCC's firm positions towards the brotherly Republic of Lebanon, its continuous support for Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and stability, and its backing for the path of reform and state-building.
He emphasised the necessity of implementing UN Security Council resolutions concerning Lebanon, especially Resolution 1701, and the Taif Agreement, to restore permanent security and stability in Lebanon, ensure respect for its territorial integrity, political independence, and sovereignty within its internationally recognised borders, and extend the Lebanese government's control over all Lebanese territory in order to fulfill the aspirations of the Lebanese people for a more secure, prosperous, and stable future.
