  HE the GCCSG: The Council's Countries are Committed to Combating Terrorism and its Financing Methods and Support the Efforts of the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism

His Excellency Mr. Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), stressed that the countries of the GCC are keen to combat terrorism and dry up its sources of funding and support the efforts of the United Nations (UN) Office of Counter-Terrorism to help establish peace worldwide. 

This came during His Excellency’s meeting with His Excellency Mr. Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary General of the UN Office of Counter Terrorism on the sidelines of His Excellency Mr. Albudaiwi's participation in the meetings of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York, the United States of America.  

During the meeting, several topics were discussed, including a review of the efforts made by the GCC in combating terrorism, in addition to casting light on the close cooperation between the Council, the international community, and the UN in this field to mitigate the activities of extremist and terrorist groups. Additionally, discussions were held on ways to develop and enhance these joint efforts to confront and combat terrorism.

Meanwhile, His Excellency Mr. Vronkov announced the UN's intention, in collaboration with Nigeria, to organise the African Summit on Counter-Terrorism in the Nigerian capital, Abuja, in April 2024. The summit will focus on enhancing regional cooperation, institution-building in the field of counter-terrorism, and addressing the evolving nature of terrorism in the African continent, according to His Excellency Mr. Fronkov, who expressed his hope that the GCC countries would participate in this summit to share their expertise and present their multi, successful, and advanced programmes in the fight against terrorism.
