Page ContentJOINT PRESS STATEMENTGCC-SG’s Head Quarters – March 7, 2016In the framework of the ongoing - Cooperation between the GCC Secretariat General and GCC Member States and the European Commission, a workshop was held on March 7, 2016 to strengthen cooperation in the Transport Sector between the two sides, focusing on railways and aviation. The workshop was attended by representatives from GCC Member States, and the GCC- Secretariat General as well as by representatives from the EU and the World Bank. Both sides recognized the importance of continuing and deepening their cooperation in the Transport Sector, particularly in railway and aviation, training and capacity building, transfer and exchange of expertise and lessons learnt, notably by holding workshops and seminars, and endeavoured to furthering a mutually beneficial dialogue. Both sides also acknowledged that the GCC- Secretariat General, ERA and UNIFE have been discussing the potential signature of MoUs between them.The GCC- Secretariat General and the EU delegation exchanged on the key railway and aviation issues including the EU aviation strategy; key elements and recent developments of the GCC railway project and EU railway policy; EU infrastructure planning and coordination of national projects; management of shared railway systems – the EU framework for interoperability and safety; international rail freight transport; and discussions on relevant technical, institutional and regulatory requirements in the railway sector. Both sides underlined the need to use this framework to further define potential areas of cooperation in preparation for future meeting(s). Both sides agreed to meet during the 2nd half of 2016 in Brussels to continue their engagement on this basis.
