  GCC and the United Kingdom discuss means of cooperation in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa

Dr. Abdel Aziz Hamad Aluwaisheg, Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Negotiations Affairs of the Gulf Cooperation Council, met with Mr. Julian Riley, the UK’s Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea on Monday 20th May 2019, at the headquarters of the GCC Secretariat in Riyadh.

The meeting discussed the UK’s strategy in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea area, which includes political, security, developmental, demographic and environmental dimensions. They exchanged views on links between economic development and combating terrorism in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. Piracy, human trafficking and means to achieve security and stability in the Red Sea region were also discussed.

Dr. Aluwaisheg pointed out that this meeting comes within the framework of the GCC-UK Strategic Partnership. The two sides discussed the priorities of their cooperation, including the most important challenges and the most important opportunities in enhancing security stability and achieving development in the Red Sea region.
